Upheal vs Jane App: which AI EHR is right for your therapy practice?
Outline

Jane has been running clinics for over a decade, and the scheduling is genuinely good. If that's why you're on it, fair enough.

Jane offers AI Scribe as a $15 per month add-on, with five free notes a month included on every plan. It records a session or takes your dictation and drafts a chart note. What it writes from is the recording. Jane's own guidance is explicit that AI Scribe is a charting feature and does not interact with intake forms, so the goals a client set at intake, their treatment plan, and the pattern building across months are not what the note is drawn from.

Upheal's AI has the full record. The note it generates knows what the client came in for, what's shifted, and what hasn't. Treatment plans link to every session note. A compliance checker audits documentation before you sign. An AI assistant handles scheduling, billing, and client messaging, the work that doesn't happen in the session room but still takes up your evening.

This page is an honest look at both.

What does Jane AI Scribe cost?

Jane AI Scribe is $15 per month per opted-in practitioner for unlimited notes, on top of your existing Jane plan. Every plan also includes five free AI Scribe notes a month. Jane prices in USD: Balance $54, Practice $79, Thrive $99, with per-practitioner fees on Practice and Thrive.

The entry tier is narrower than the price suggests. Balance covers one practitioner profile and caps you at 20 appointments a month, so a working caseload needs Practice or above. Practice with AI Scribe is $94 a month before a single session. Verified against jane.app/pricing on 4 September 2026.

Upheal is $1 per session, capped at $69/month. AI notes, treatment plans, compliance checking, scheduling, billing, and client messaging are all included. If your caseload is lighter one month, you pay less.

Where Jane wins

Scheduling is Jane's real strength. Self-booking, automated reminders, and multi-location support are well-built and have been refined over years. Jane was built for multi-discipline clinics: physiotherapy, chiropractic, massage, and mental health under one roof, and the scheduling reflects that. For practices with complex, multi-practitioner configurations, that infrastructure is solid. For solo therapists or mental health-only practices, a lot of that complexity is overhead you don't need. A waitlist and waitlist notifications come on every plan, while automated waitlist management, room and equipment booking and patient self check-in sit on the top Thrive tier.

Jane also includes treatment plans, custom charting templates, outcome measure surveys and intake forms on every plan, Balance included, alongside a large library of pre-built chart templates across disciplines. The gap this page is about is not whether Jane has treatment plans. It is whether the AI can see them.

Jane's privacy coverage is broad. Its plan grid lists HIPAA, PIPEDA and GDPR compliance on every plan, its telehealth guide adds PHIPA, and at signup you choose a data centre in Canada, the US, the UK or Australia. Upheal is HIPAA, PHIPA, PIPEDA, GDPR, and DPA compliant, has completed a SOC 2 Type II audit, and is continuously externally tested. On the privacy laws each platform names, the two are close. Jane's published choice of data centre location is a real point in its favour if data residency matters to you.

Jane charges $20 a month for insurance billing on its Practice and Thrive plans, and the add-on applies to the whole account rather than only the clinicians who need it, so it scales with your total license count. Upheal's insurance billing is live now, with claims submission, ERA processing, and eligibility checks built directly into the platform. Billing fees apply per claim, see the pricing page for details. If insurance billing was the only reason you were still on Jane, that reason is gone. Migrate your records and get started.

Where Upheal wins

The AI knows your clients. Jane AI Scribe listens to your session, or takes your dictation, and drafts a chart note. That's useful, and Jane does it well. What the note is written from is the recording. Jane's own guidance states that AI Scribe is a charting feature and does not interact with intake forms. The treatment plan, the goals from intake, the modality you're working in and the pattern building across months all sit in the chart, and the scribe is not drawing on them.

Upheal's AI does. The note it generates draws on your client's full record. Treatment plans connect to session notes through Golden Thread. When a goal hasn't moved in six weeks, the documentation reflects that. When something shifts, the note reflects what it shifted from.

The Compliance Checker. Upheal audits notes against payer standards before you submit. If something will get flagged, you find out before the payer does. Jane has no equivalent.

Flat versus per session. Jane's price is flat whether you see five clients or fifty. Practice plus AI Scribe is $94 a month, and the $69 entry figure only holds if you stay under 20 appointments on Balance. Upheal caps at $69/month with everything included, and if your caseload is lighter, you pay less.

Running both: Smart Fill

If you are staying on Jane for practice management, Upheal's Smart Fill maps Upheal's note sections onto Jane's template structure so AI-generated content transfers in a single click. You get behavioral health documentation without disrupting the billing, scheduling and practice management you already run in Jane.

Pricing

Jane's base plans run USD $54 to $99 a month, plus per-practitioner fees on Practice and Thrive. Adding AI Scribe brings that to $69 to $114 per opted-in practitioner. The $69 figure is Balance, which is limited to one practitioner and 20 appointments a month, so most therapists are really comparing against Practice with AI Scribe at $94.

Upheal is $1 per session, capped at $69/month. AI notes, treatment plans, compliance checking, scheduling, telehealth, billing, and client messaging. All included. A light month costs less. A full caseload caps at $69.

Is Jane App or Upheal right for your practice?

Jane App is a good fit if:

You're in a multi-discipline clinic where Jane was the practice-wide choice. Jane's scheduling infrastructure is strong across multiple practitioners, multi-location and waiting lists, and it has a decade of refinement behind it. If AI documentation is a nice-to-have rather than a priority, AI Scribe is a reasonable add-on to an otherwise solid platform.

Upheal is the better fit for mental health private practice:

Upheal was built specifically for therapists in private practice, solo or group. If you're looking for a Jane alternative, or if you're on Jane and the AI feels bolted on, Upheal covers the same core EHR scope for a therapy practice, including scheduling, billing, telehealth, client records and forms, with AI that connects to the full clinical record rather than just the session recording. Notes link to treatment plans. A compliance checker catches documentation gaps before you sign. At $1/session capped at $69/month, a full caseload costs the same as Jane's Balance tier once AI Scribe is added, and Balance only allows 20 appointments a month.

Insurance billing is live now, with claims submission, ERA processing, and eligibility checks built directly into the platform. Billing fees apply per claim, see the pricing page for details. If that's what's kept you on Jane, that reason is gone. Migrate your records and get started.
