Upheal alternatives in 2026: 8 options and who they suit

Upheal wrote this page. We are one of the options, so we say where another tool is the better fit, and every competitor price links to the vendor's own pricing page with the date we checked it.
The best alternative to Upheal depends on one question: do you want AI notes beside the EHR you already use, or one system that does notes, scheduling, billing and telehealth together?
If you want to keep your EHR, the closest alternatives are Mentalyc (therapy-specific notes, tiered by note volume from $19.99 a month), Supanote (from $19.99 a month, with one-click fill into SimplePractice and TherapyNotes on its Pro plan), AutoNotes (from $19 a month for typed or dictated notes, $49 with session recording) and Blueprint ($0.99 a session, strongest on measurement-based care). Freed and Heidi are general-medical scribes: fast, well made, and a good fit for psychiatry or mixed clinics, but their notes read medical rather than therapeutic. Upheal's version of this is AI Notes at $39 a month beside any EHR: unlimited sessions for individuals and couples, family sessions on a Family SOAP or custom template, and Smart Fill, which puts the finished note into SimplePractice, TherapyNotes, Jane, Owl Practice or Healthie in one click. Upheal's free plan covers typed, dictated and uploaded notes in individual therapy.
If you want one system, the alternatives are SimplePractice ($49 to $99 a month plus $35 for Note Taker) and TherapyNotes ($69 a month plus $40 for TherapyFuel). Both have long track records and large user communities. Blueprint's all-in-one EHR is $1.49 a session with claims and eligibility checks included. Upheal has two plans: the EHR at $1 a session, with AI notes, treatment plans, scheduling, client portal, telehealth and insurance billing tools included, and EHR Pro at $99 a month flat for unlimited sessions with Assistant Pro. If you would rather hand claims over, Upheal Managed Billing works them for 5.9% of what it collects.
Where Upheal is not the right choice today: therapy groups that need a note for each member (Mentalyc Super, Supanote XL and Clinically AI do this), prescribers who need e-prescribing (TherapyNotes has it), family practices that need guardian roles or split family invoices, which Upheal's family sessions do not have yet, and practices leaving TherapyNotes with years of note history, because our migration imports editable notes from SimplePractice exports only. From other EHRs, past notes arrive as PDF files on the client's chart.
Prices checked on 5 November 2026 on each vendor's own pricing page (for TherapyNotes, its support center pricing article).
Where Upheal is different
- AI notes beside your EHR, or the whole EHR. Start with AI Notes next to the system you already use. If you later turn on Upheal's scheduling, billing and records, there is nothing left to copy between systems.
- Managed Billing. Upheal drafts the note and you sign it. Our billing team takes the claim from there through to payment, for 5.9% of what it collects. It is for US practices, by application.
- Guided migration. The Upheal Assistant maps and imports your clients, notes and files from your old EHR's export. If you want a person, someone on our team goes through the mapping with you on a call. Most therapists finish setup in under an hour, plus an overnight import, and migration is free, with imported sessions never charged.
Alternatives that work beside the EHR you already use
Mentalyc
Mentalyc is an AI documentation platform built for therapists that works beside your EHR by design. It records sessions or takes dictation and uploads, writes notes in SOAP, DAP, BIRP and other formats, builds treatment plans, and scores the therapeutic alliance after each session with its Alliance Genie feature.
Mentalyc pricing, checked 5 November 2026: Mini $19.99 a month for 40 notes, individual adult therapy only; Basic $39.99 for 100; Pro $69.99 for 160 and adds couples, family, child, EMDR and psychiatry notes; Super $119.99 for 330 and adds group therapy notes; Team $59.99 a seat a month on promotion (regular $119.99) with unlimited notes. Notes transfer into SimplePractice, TherapyNotes, Jane and others with one click.
Choose Mentalyc over Upheal if you run therapy groups and want a note for each member (Super or Team), if alliance scoring after each session matters to you, or if you write only a handful of notes a month and want the lowest entry price that includes recording.
Choose Upheal over Mentalyc if you want unlimited notes for a flat $39 rather than note caps, if you want couples and family notes without stepping up to the $69.99 tier (Upheal's family sessions use a Family SOAP or custom template), or if you want the notes tool to be able to become your EHR later. Mentalyc has no scheduling, billing, telehealth or client portal.

Supanote
Supanote is a therapy-specific notes tool whose main selling point is Super Fill: one click fills the finished note into SimplePractice, TherapyNotes and other supported EHRs, on its Pro plan and above.
Supanote pricing, checked 5 November 2026: Starter $19.99 a month for 40 notes, with couples sessions; Pro $39.99 for unlimited notes with EHR integration; XL $69.99 adds group therapy sessions; Group Practice on request.
Choose Supanote over Upheal if you need group therapy notes (XL), or if you write fewer than 40 notes a month and want recorded-session notes at the lowest price.
Both fill finished notes into SimplePractice and TherapyNotes in one click; Upheal's Smart Fill also covers Jane, Owl Practice and Healthie. Choose Upheal over Supanote if you want notes, treatment plans, telehealth with automatic notes and the Upheal Assistant in one place beside your EHR at the same $39, with a path to the full EHR when you are ready.
AutoNotes
AutoNotes is a low-cost therapy documentation tool with a large user base. The entry plan writes notes from what you type or dictate; session recording starts on the Workspace plan.
AutoNotes pricing, checked 5 November 2026: Notes $19 a month per clinician, typed or dictated input only; Workspace $49 adds session recording, telehealth and calendar sync; Practice $69 adds client charts, a portal and self-pay billing. No insurance claims, eligibility checks or ERA on any plan.
Choose AutoNotes over Upheal if you never want to record sessions and want the cheapest per-clinician notes plan, or if you want a simple tool with many note formats and nothing else.
Choose Upheal over AutoNotes if you record sessions or run telehealth (Upheal AI Notes is $39 with unlimited recorded sessions; AutoNotes needs Workspace at $49), if you bill insurance, or if you want typed and dictated individual-therapy notes for free: Upheal's free plan covers that at $0.

Blueprint
Blueprint started as a measurement-based care platform and now sells AI documentation two ways: beside the EHR you already use, or as an all-in-one EHR of its own. Its library of more than 600 assessments, worksheets and interventions is the differentiator: the AI suggests them, you assign them, and scores track between sessions.
Blueprint pricing, checked 5 November 2026: $0.99 a session beside your EHR, and $1.49 a session as the all-in-one EHR, bought as credits that never expire. Some visitors see the plan beside your EHR priced at a flat $69 a seat a month for unlimited sessions instead. Claim submissions and eligibility checks are included on the all-in-one EHR, and notes made beside your EHR are copied into it.
Choose Blueprint over Upheal if standardized assessments between sessions are central to how you practice, if you keep your EHR and see fewer than about 40 sessions a month, so $0.99 a session beats a flat $39, if you want one all-in price per session with claims and eligibility checks included, or if you want AI help with marketing, such as local SEO audits and profile rewrites.
Choose Upheal over Blueprint if you keep your EHR, see more than about 40 sessions a month and want notes filled in with one click rather than copied: Upheal AI Notes is a flat $39 for unlimited sessions. On the EHR side, Upheal is $1 a session or $99 flat against $1.49, and an insured session lands within a few cents of Blueprint's.

Freed

Freed pricing, checked 5 November 2026: Starter $39 a month for up to 40 notes; Core $79 for unlimited notes and Clinical Evidence answers; Premier $119 a month with EHR push, dictation and coding.
Choose Freed over Upheal if you prescribe or run a mixed medical and behavioral clinic and want medical-style notes, if coding suggestions matter, or if you want its AI phone receptionist product.
Choose Upheal over Freed if you do psychotherapy and want notes in therapy formats linked to treatment plans, if you want unlimited notes at $39 rather than $79, or if you want a client portal, telehealth and billing in the same system.

Heidi
Heidi is a general-medical scribe used by physicians, nurses, allied health and psychologists, with a free tier and strong clinical-evidence answers. Heidi II adds agents and Routines for pre-charting and other admin tasks, with that usage metered on every plan.
Heidi pricing, checked 5 November 2026: a free seat with unlimited ambient documentation and limited use of advanced features; Clinician $110 a user a month billed annually ($150 monthly); Teams custom, with EHR integration.
Choose Heidi over Upheal if you want a free, unlimited-transcription scribe beside your EHR, or if you work across specialties.
Choose Upheal over Heidi if you want therapy-specific note formats and treatment plans, a client portal, telehealth and billing, or if you want AI notes beside your EHR for $39 a month rather than $110 for a Clinician seat.

Alternatives that replace your EHR
SimplePractice
SimplePractice is the most widely used EHR in private-practice mental health: scheduling, client portal, insurance claims, telehealth and a large community. Its AI is an add-on. Note Taker records sessions and drafts notes; Care Aide bundles Note Taker with more AI tools.
SimplePractice pricing, checked 5 November 2026: Starter $49, Essential $79 and Plus $99 a month; Note Taker $35 a month; Care Aide $59 a month for the account owner and $49 for each additional clinician; additional practitioners on Plus are $74 a month each. New accounts get 50% off for the first three months, so compare the standard price.
Choose SimplePractice over Upheal if you have years of history in it and would rather not move, or if you want the largest user community and the most third-party integrations.
Choose Upheal over SimplePractice if full price matters (Essential plus Note Taker is $114 a month; Upheal EHR Pro is $99 with AI notes and Assistant Pro included, and the pay-per-session EHR is $1 a session), or if you want AI built into the workflow rather than bolted on. If you do leave SimplePractice, the migration is free and guided: Upheal imports its notes as editable session notes with the original PDF attached to the chart, and someone on our team can go through the mapping with you.

TherapyNotes
TherapyNotes is a long-established practice-management EHR with HITRUST certification, e-prescribing and MIPS reporting, plus TherapyFuel, an AI suite that drafts notes, treatment plans, history summaries and session prep.
TherapyNotes pricing, from its support center pricing article, checked 5 November 2026: Solo $69 a month; Group $89 for the first clinician and $60 for each additional one, with unlimited non-clinical users; TherapyFuel $40 per clinician a month; claims $0.25 each plus $0.09 for ERA; ePrescribe $65 per prescriber a month; MIPS reporting $359 a year. These are TherapyNotes' updated rates, which take effect on 1 December 2026.
Choose TherapyNotes over Upheal if you prescribe (Upheal has no e-prescribing), if you report MIPS, if you need HITRUST certification or 24/7 phone support, or if you have years of notes there, since those arrive in Upheal as PDF files rather than editable notes.
Choose Upheal over TherapyNotes if you want the AI inside the workflow rather than a $40 add-on (Solo plus TherapyFuel is $109 a month against $99 for Upheal EHR Pro), if you want AI notes for couples and families (TherapyFuel does not yet write couples, family, group or intake notes), if you want claims at $0.30 with no monthly billing fee and the Upheal Assistant drafting denial appeals, or if you would rather hand claims over to Managed Billing. 97% of claims submitted through Upheal are accepted on the first attempt.

Frequently asked questions
What is the best alternative to Upheal?
Mentalyc, if you are keeping your EHR and want therapy-specific notes with alliance scoring. SimplePractice or TherapyNotes, if you want a long-established all-in-one EHR and are happy to pay for an AI add-on. Blueprint, if measurement-based care is central to your practice. The right one depends on whether you want notes beside your EHR or one system that does everything.
Is there a free alternative to Upheal?
Heidi has a free seat with unlimited transcription, though its notes are general-medical rather than therapeutic. ClinicFrame has a free plan. Upheal's own free plan writes notes from typed text, dictation and uploads for individual therapy, with telehealth calling but no recorded-session notes.
What is the cheapest Upheal alternative?
AutoNotes Notes at $19 a month for typed or dictated notes without recording. For recorded sessions, Mentalyc Mini and Supanote Starter are $19.99 a month for 40 notes. Upheal AI Notes is $39 a month with no note cap.
Which Upheal alternatives work with SimplePractice or TherapyNotes?
Mentalyc and Supanote push finished notes into both with one click. AutoNotes, Blueprint, Freed (Premier) and Heidi work beside them too. Both EHRs also sell their own AI: SimplePractice Note Taker at $35 a month and TherapyNotes TherapyFuel at $40 per clinician a month. Upheal AI Notes works beside either one, and Smart Fill in the Upheal Chrome extension fills the finished note into SimplePractice, TherapyNotes, Jane, Owl Practice or Healthie in one click.
Can I use Upheal beside my current EHR instead of switching?
Yes. Upheal AI Notes is $39 a month for unlimited sessions, with telehealth that writes the note automatically and Smart Fill to put it into SimplePractice, TherapyNotes, Jane, Owl Practice or Healthie in one click. If you later want Upheal as your EHR, the next answer covers the switch.
How hard is it to switch to Upheal from another EHR?
Most therapists finish setup in under an hour, plus an overnight import. The Upheal Assistant maps and imports your clients, notes and files from your old EHR's export, and if you want a person, someone on our team goes through the mapping with you on a call. From SimplePractice, notes arrive as editable session notes; from other EHRs, past notes arrive as PDF files on each client's chart. Paper charts can come too: Upheal types out scans and phone photos, handwriting included, and you check each typed copy against the original before upload. Migration is free, and imported sessions are never charged.
Who should not choose Upheal?
Therapists who run groups and need a note per member, prescribers who need e-prescribing, practices that report MIPS, practices leaving TherapyNotes with years of notes they want to keep editable, and family practices that need guardian roles or split family invoices. For most of those, the entries above name the better fit.
