Do I keep my own payer contracts?

Yes. You bill under your own NPI, with your own payer contracts and rates. Upheal gives you the tools to submit claims, check eligibility, and track everything in one place. Your payer relationships stay yours.

Do I need a separate clearinghouse?

No. Clearinghouse connectivity is built into Upheal, the same way a payment processor handles card networks for you behind the scenes. Enroll a payer for electronic claims, eligibility checks, and ERAs, and everything runs through one loop. If you'd rather keep your current clearinghouse for now, you can. Just post payments manually from your EOBs or ERAs.

Do I have to learn billing to use it?

No. Claims fill themselves in from your notes and client details, problems are flagged before you submit, and payments match themselves when the ERA arrives. If a payer rejects something, you'll see why in plain terms. And when you're not sure about anything, ask the Assistant, or get a real person on a call.

What does it cost?

Insurance billing is usage based: $0.30 per claim submission and $0.15 per eligibility check. One claim can carry several sessions for the same client and payer. There is no setup cost and no monthly fee on top of your EHR plan.

Can I bill secondary and tertiary insurance?

Yes. Each client's profile holds primary, secondary, and tertiary insurance, and you can bill all three through Upheal, so clients with more than one plan don't mean more than one workflow.

What happens if a claim is denied?

You'll see the denial next to the session it belongs to, along with the reason, and Upheal will draft an appeal for you, pulling relevant information from the client's chart to establish medical necessity. You review, edit if needed, and send.

Should I take insurance or stay private pay?

It depends on how quickly you can fill your caseload. Insurance brings steady referrals but pays a lower, fixed rate and adds billing work. Private pay earns more per session, but you find every client yourself. Does Upheal handle credentialing?

Credentialing is included in Managed Billing, Upheal's done-for-you billing service. Insurance billing in Upheal assumes you are already paneled with your payers. Managed Billing is currently on a waitlist.

Is insurance billing available outside the US?

No, insurance billing is available to US practices only. Client payments are available in the US and Canada. Notes, scheduling, and telehealth are available everywhere Upheal is.

Which payers can I bill through Upheal?

Any payer available through Upheal's built-in clearinghouse connection, including commercial plans, Medicaid, and Medicare, with no exclusions. Search for your payer during enrollment to confirm.

How long until I get paid?

That depends on the payer, not on Upheal. Upheal shows each claim's status at every step and matches the ERA to the claim the day it arrives, so you always know where a payment stands.

Can I switch to Upheal billing mid year?

Yes. Enroll your payers whenever you're ready, and keep billing older sessions through your current clearinghouse while you transition. Post those payments manually so your books stay in one place.

How is Managed Billing different?

Insurance billing is the software: you submit claims and Upheal automates the rest. Managed Billing is a service: Upheal's billing team works your claims, denials, and follow up for you, including credentialing. Managed Billing is currently on a waitlist.
