About Upheal

Therapists got into this work to help people. Somewhere along the way, the job became evenings of notes, paperwork, and chasing insurance payments, and too many of them burn out or leave. Our mission is to bring balance back to therapists' lives. Upheal is the AI-native platform that takes the admin off their plate: session notes, treatment plans, scheduling, and insurance billing in one agentic practice management software, so the hours they get back go to clients, family, or rest.

About the role

Our ambition is to make Upheal the AI agent for mental health providers. As Head of Product Design, you'll help shape what that means for our product and the people who use it.

This is a hands-on leadership role. You'll lead a small team, own the design direction, and shape product strategy. You'll also stay close to the work: talking to customers, turning broad roadmap priorities into concrete product bets, and designing and shipping our most important initiatives. The role calls for someone who can connect long-term thinking with the details that make a product work.

This role has a big impact on what we build. For much of our product work, you'll take on what a product manager would usually own: deciding which problems to solve, defining the solution, and measuring whether it worked.

Your responsibilities

  • Lead and evolve the design function, adapting how we work as AI changes both our product and the practice of design.
  • Own the quality and coherence of Upheal's product experience, setting a clear direction for how providers interact with an AI agent.
  • Manage and mentor the design team, helping them grow their craft, judgment, and ownership.
  • Partner with clinical product and engineering leadership to shape strategy and the roadmap, translating high-level priorities into problems to solve and bets to test.
  • Personally lead design on business-critical initiatives, from early discovery through final designs, implementation, and iteration after launch.
  • Own and develop the design system so it supports a consistent experience and helps the team move quickly.
  • Drive user research through customer conversations, usability testing, and surveys. Identify the product analytics we need and work with the team to turn evidence into decisions.
  • Build a deep understanding of mental health care, providers' day-to-day realities, and the changing market.
  • Support marketing and other teams where design can make a meaningful contribution to the business.

About you

  • You're an accomplished product designer and builder, equally comfortable shaping a problem, exploring solutions, and crafting the final experience.
  • You combine strong individual design work with leadership. You can set direction, develop others, and take responsibility for the work you ship.
  • You actively follow and experiment with AI. You have a point of view on how agents should work for people, and you're willing to rethink familiar patterns as the technology develops.
  • You love spending time with customers. You're drawn to mental health care and want to understand its complexity, including the pressures and constraints providers face.
  • You think in systems and have a sharp eye for detail. You know when precision matters, when a simpler solution is enough, and which trade-offs are worth making.
  • You're comfortable with ambiguity. You can turn an open-ended business goal into a clear product direction and carry it through to delivery.
  • You connect design decisions to customer needs and business outcomes, and you're willing to step beyond a narrow design remit when the team needs you.
