Do you use an Apple computer like a Mac, iMac, or MacBook? If so, Upheal's desktop app, Upheal AI Notes, is the simplest, most reliable way to get notes from your online sessions.

  • Works with headphones: The app picks up audio both from your microphone and your computer's system, so you can wear headphones while using it.

  • Takes notes from any call on your computer:

    • Works with calls in your browser (like Google Meets, doxy.me, SimplePractice)

    • Works with desktop apps (like Zoom and Microsoft Teams)

  • Reminds you about upcoming sessions: Shows a notification before sessions scheduled on your Upheal calendar and connected calendars

  • Captures in-person sessions: While we still recommend our mobile app for in-person sessions, our desktop app works too!

Installing the app

To install and set up Upheal AI Notes for Mac:

  1. Click on the download in your browser, and drag and drop the Upheal AI Notes icon onto the Applications folder icon.

  2. Go to your Applications folder, and open Upheal AI Notes.

  3. If your computer asks if you're sure you want to open the app, click Open.

  4. Log in as usual.

If you log in with Google, click Continue when prompted.

  5. The app will ask for permission to transcribe your sessions. Please allow both microphone and system audio access.

We need these permissions in order to capture your and your clients' voices. The app will never "listen" or record unless you begin a session in the app.

That's it! Once you've logged in and allowed audio access, you can start using the app.

Capturing sessions

  1. Find Upheal AI Notes in the menu bar at the top of your screen. (It won't appear in your Dock)

  2. In the app, click Start session.

  3. Choose a client, or hold an anonymous session.

  4. Click Start session, and Upheal will begin capturing audio to transcribe.

  5. Start your telehealth session on your computer.

  6. While your session is in progress, the desktop app is hidden, the app logo becomes a sound monitor, and you'll also see a microphone in your menu bar.

To see to the app again, click the sound monitor icon.

To minimize or maximize the app during a session, click the arrows:

  7. When you're finished, click End session.

  8. Confirm or fill out the session details, and click Generate note.

  9. You can see your session processing in the app. To go to the note in Upheal in your browser, click on the session.

Settings and notifications

Session end reminders

You can set reminders to make a sound, or to automatically end session recording, after a set period of time.

  1. During a session, switch on Session end reminder to open the reminder options.

  2. Choose which reminders you want, and set a time period.

Settings

You can change these settings:

  • Open Upheal automatically at login

    • If you turn on this setting, the Upheal desktop app opens on its own when you log in to your computer.

  • Session start notifications

    • If you use your Upheal calendar, Upheal can show a notification one minute before the start time, including a quick way to start the session.

Accessing desktop app settings:

  1. To open your desktop app settings, click the three-dot menu icon.

  2. Use the toggles to turn settings off and on:

More information

I clicked away and the app disappeared, where can I find it?

When you click off of the Upheal desktop app, it minimizes automatically. You can find it again in your menu bar at the top of your screen. During sessions, the Upheal logo becomes a sound level monitor.

Can I use the desktop app for in-person sessions?

Yes, the desktop app also works for in-person sessions. However, you might prefer using our mobile app for iPhones and iPads, since a smaller device could be more convenient.

What versions of macOS will the desktop app work with?

Our desktop app will work with macOS 14.4 (Sonoma) or newer.

Will you make an app for Windows computers, too?

Yes, we plan to make a desktop app for Windows computers, and a mobile app for Android phones, in the not-so-far future (as of November, 2025). Keep an eye on our email newsletter for updates!
